Oh Great Gray Mother
Oh great gray mother of the wild,
We have come to honor you and your child.
We open up our hearts with love,
To honor you from the land above.
We know your journey of 10,000 miles,
Is observed coastwise with awe and smiles.
We send love and healing to you and your kind,
And promise to protect you with laws that bind.
Oh great gray mother of the sea,
We watch you and your calf with glee.
We will love and protect you night and day,
So you may safely give birth in Magdalena Bay.
Thank you for breaching way up in the air,
With your mighty power and special flair.
Oh great gray mother of the sea,
Thanks for sharing your gifts with me.

Newly Born
A new born calf is a sight to behold,
It is black, 15 feet long, and a poor swimmer I am told.
With black skin shining in the morning sun,
It's first day of swimming and spouting has just begun.
The baby knows to keep close to its mothers side,
And often rests on her back to go for a ride.
Weeks go by as the young calf practices its skills,
Of swimming, spyhopping, breaching and other thrills.
Humans in a boat are a curious sight.
As the calf pops up and looks left and right.
I reach out my hand to touch your soft nose,
I know to be careful....because thar she blows!
It is such a gift to lean over and pet,
Your head or tail and not get wet.
Thank you for sharing your curiosity of me,
So I may experience a gray whale of the sea.
